Message from the Publisher

As Aya's condition worsened, her diary entries became virtually illegible. Shioka Kito, her mother, transcribed
them in order to put this book together. During the editing process, many people cooperated with us and gave us
tremendous encouragement. We are really grateful to them all for their kindness.
Aya passed away quietly while surrounded by her family at 00:55 on May 23rd, 1988. Although she was unable to
speak, just before departing this world she strongly uttered the sound 'a,' the first syllable of 'arigato'
(Thank you).
Please send any thoughts you may have after reading this book to our editorial section.
Thank you very much.

  1. I have not read it, but I have watched the drama "1 litre of tears" that was created about it. I have never been so amazed. I loved the strength with which she fought the disease, and could not stop myself from crying at certain points of the drama.
I have been trying to get contact details (email, phone, anything) of Aya's mother Shioka, so that I can thank her and tell her how amazing she was in handling it all, along with her family members. A salute to her strength. "Arigato".
